I am reluctantly offering my 1996 Robin Hood 3A for sale as a restoration project. With 9,600 miles on the clock.
This is a genuine, DVLA-registered Robin Hood, professionally built in 1996 by Mark Crankshaw, using 1984 Ford Sierra donor components. The car is MOT and road-tax exempt due to its age and comes with a mountain of paperwork and documentation relating to the vehicle and its build.
I bought the car with the intention of carrying out a full recommission and restoration, but having started to get into it, I have started to appreciate the amount of work required is greater than I foolishly thought. I also don’t currently have the funds, equipment, workshop facilities or time to take the project as far as I would like.
The car is therefore being sold as a restoration/project car, so is not ready-to-drive and would suit someone with the experience, tools and enthusiasm to finish it properly. However it does drive and the engine runs smoothly being a modified more powerful 2.1L bored out pinto SOHC, when I drove it around before dismantling the cooling system.
Work already investigated / carried out…
The car has been thoroughly looked over and a number of areas have been identified for attention, including:
● Cooling system requires recommissioning.
● Radiator is heavily corroded and needs replacing.
● Coolant hoses and associated cooling components have been removed/inspected.
● Cooling system has some internal corrosion/rust contamination and requires thorough flushing and recommissioning.
● Thermostat/water pump and associated gaskets have been removed as part of the cooling-system work.
● Some chassis/weld areas around the front suspension have some fine cracks which will require professional inspection and, if deemed necessary, repair.
● Suspension/chassis condition requires further assessment before the car is returned to regular road use (not necessary but I was going to do it)
● Various aged hoses, fittings and components will require replacement or refurbishment as part of the restoration.
● The electrical system would benefit from tidying and checking, although it works without a problem as far as I can tell.
● The car currently has a Weber 32/36 carburettor setup fitted, which does the job, however I have a set of professionally steam cleaned twin Weber 45 DCOE carbs included with the sale, consisting of the carburettors and all associated manifold/components ready for instillation, including fuel pump, fuel regulator/filter. (Taken from another Robin Hood)
● Fuel system components supplied with the project are also included.
● Valuable ECU Alpha computer system with ignition amplifiers and TPS components ready for instillation specifically for the Robin Hood. (Taken from an old Robin Hood)
(It is worth noting that the coolant system is currently not attached to the vehicle and thus is non operational. However I will be selling the parts for this along with the car (including new thermostat, thermostat housing gasket, water pump gasket and some fresh radiator hoses, which is not photographed). The radiator as mentioned will need inspecting and flushing, along with the other coolant passages. I thought the buyer would prefer to carry out this work themselves with the parts included with this sale rather than me doing a last minute job)
Once I started getting into the cooling system, chassis and mechanical areas, it became clear that it really needs someone with more suitable workshop facilities, fabrication equipment and experience than I currently have.
I’d rather pass it on to an enthusiast who can give it the attention it deserves rather than leave it sitting unfinished.
This would make an excellent basis for a full restoration for someone familiar with classic kit cars, Ford Sierra running gear and DIY fabrication/mechanical work.
There is a lot of good stuff here, including the car itself, Ford running gear, Weber equipment, waterproof canopy + doors, lights, additional parts and paperwork.
Viewing is welcome for anyone seriously interested. Please feel free to ask questions and I will be as helpful and transparent as I can regarding what I have found during my ownership.
Priced accordingly for a genuine restoration project with above listed items.
